Teaching Conversation to ESL Students

ESL conversation activities are in high demand among ESL teachers, yet there is a scarcity of truly useful, effective – and most importantly, enjoyable – activities in the market. Every ESL teacher has inevitably had a parent or a student request a “conversation” class, while failing to realize how difficult this can actually be. Eliciting spontaneous sentences from students with limited language abilities can be difficult, even impossible in some situations. This is especially true for young students, who tend to be shy and insecure in their language abilities. In situations like these, it is perhaps most useful to use dialogues, which students can first read. This will help them build confidence, and once the are comfortable with the dialogue and the vocabulary/grammar structures contained within, they can take the next step and attempt to produce their own dialogue, elaborating on the dialogue they have just read. This ESL conversation activity is sure to get even the most shy students speaking!
